Brief 3: Magazine and online
How do you intend to use the four areas of the media theoretical framework to communicate meaning and meet the requirements of your chosen brief? (approx. 400 words)
Statement of intent - Magazine
My brief is to create two editions of a lifestyle magazine aimed at a target audience of 16-25 and two pages of a functional website for Hearst. I have chosen to produce this magazine around creative arts and culture, it is intended to be an inspirational and informative resource for young creatives in the 16-25 age range. From focus group research I have narrowed the four main topics to film, art, fashion and music which most stories will revolve around as these were the topic my research group said they would be most interested in reading about. Because of archives focus on design and art, the photography and graphic design must be of high-quality to have credibility in this space. The design style for both the magazine and website will be modern and minimalist putting the focus on the featured art and photography. This style will be used for both magazine covers, contents pages and the website to create a clear brand identity. Archive will focus on new releases and trends whilst also featuring inspirational people and works. By exposing audiences to relevant media archive acts as a monthly dose of inspiration and news for young people who aspire to work in creative industries. Articles will feature educational information to aid in the creative development of the readers. The front covers will feature art and photography as a way of promoting new artists and will also feature reader submitted works. It will be priced at £5 as it is primarily targeted at young people, who may not have disposable income, whilst not being priced too low which could make it appear low quality.
statement of intent - website
The same design philosophy will be applied to the website featuring modern, minimalist aesthetic to put the main focus on the featured work. The colour red, white and black colour scheme will be maintained using the bright red to indicate areas of importance. The landing page will be uncluttered featuring the mast head and a scrolling gallery of cover work to reinforce the brand identity. The landing page will also feature links to Archives social media pages, as 16-25 audience are the biggest users of social media, and a button to subscribe to the online magazine. The website will contain the same advertisements as the content's pages, acting as partnered sponsors, keeping continuity. The audio-visual element will be part of the second page and be a video essay article about a film which is intended to be an educational piece about film production. There will also be a section on the homepage where people can purchase the physical magazines when they are released, creating more convergence between the online and paper magazines.
How do you intend to link your media products to demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of the digitally convergent nature of your media production? (approx. 100 words)
The magazine contents page will feature a section about the online website and a QR code making it easy for the reader to find the online page, this should encourage traffic to the website. The physical magazines will also be adverted and available for purchase on the website driving physical sales. The website will have exclusive content and videos that are not available on the print magazine which should encourage audiences too visit the website. The websites home page will feature the art works shown on the magazine covers encouraging readers to visit the website to see the whole collection of work.
